Hiking is a popular pastime here and everyone has time to stop en route to gaze at the falls. If you are looking for another nearby waterfall that is much easier to visit, don’t miss the fantastic Mill Creek Falls, or Letort Falls and Caledonia Falls which are a bit further away. If you add the colours of autumn, the photograph will be one to treasure. Looking through the trees downhill, it’s obvious that Duncan Run continues to drop about 40 feet through a series of drops before tumbling into the Susquehanna River below. You’re welcome, Brenda. The downside of Rainbow Falls is that the flow of the Ausable River is regulated by a hydro-electric power company, but at their best they are spectacular. The falls are sacred to the Mohicans who believe they are the final resting place of the Creator. For this option, follow Duncan Run back upstream until you reach the upper, 10-foot waterfall. However, ever since I’d stumbled across the two waterfalls on Mill Creek, I’d heard rumors of other waterfalls in York County, PA. This trail quickly descends into the woods. After a bit of rock scrambling, I made it to the bottom of this waterfall. After about five minutes of hiking, the trail comes to Duncan Run. At the base of the falls, there is a lovely pool for cooling off in the summer. Next to the top of the waterfall is a neat rock shelter. Large rock walls abruptly shoot up, giving you only two choices: go up the hillside and go up and over these obstructions or get your feet wet climbing over possibly slippery rocks near the top of the falls. The ruins of a 19th-century mill are interesting but the natural scenery is more important. The northern edge of this parcel of the game lands is along Duncan Run. However, those that have the skill and tenacity to make the trip will be rewarded with some of the best scenery along the Susquehanna River in York County, PA. Duncan Run and the waterfalls of State Game Lands 181 are located a few miles east of Airville, Pennsylvania. Because of this, tackling the creek when the weather is cold, but not cold enough for ice, is probably best. At the back of the parking area, next to the game lands information sign, there are trails heading off to both the left and right. While several of the creeks are likely on private property, one creek that was rumored to have waterfalls was located on State Game Lands 181 near Airville. You can get a good look at the falls from the top but follow a trail down to the bridge to get a different view. Just downstream of this waterfall is the boundary line for State Game Lands 181 and a private property sign. This has become a popular spot because there is plenty to do; hiking, picnicking or fishing come to mind immediately. You're awesome for doing it! Despite the cold water, I opted to get my feet wet and inch along the edge of the rock walls, but use your best judgment, especially if the creek is running high. Here, Duncan Run drops about 10 feet over two drops. Once the water finishes its downward spiral, it joins the meandering creek for its onward journey. The Upper Falls in comparison to the ‘’Middle’’ are fairly small, with a drop of just 40 feet. The good news is that the upper car park is fairly close. Niagara is regularly included in lists of the top waterfalls in the world, so it demands inclusion here. If the trees were cleared out a bit, this would be a very popular spot as the view is quite commanding. The three waterfalls form the southern end of the Niagara Gorge. State Game Lands 181 is a remote piece of public land a little over two miles upstream of the better known Mill Creek. Whatever the source, these waterfalls are there for everyone to enjoy, as long as they are prepared for a walk. Winter sports are also popular during the cold months. While there are places where the land is more open than others, there is nothing along the creek that could be described as a trail. However, those that are comfortable enough with the challenges to proceed will be treated to waterfalls that, while not tall, make up for it with beauty and the chance to see something rarely seen by others. You can get closer for a different perspective of the falls and it is likely you will see fishermen trying their luck at the bottom of the falls. The best view is from the bridge above the gorge, although you can go down into the chasm to get closer. The rate of flow averages out at 85,000 cubic feet per second so there is little chance of freezing even in the coldest weather. Tucquan Glen is another great nearby hike. You can get extremely close to the cascading water. Despite not finding any photos of waterfalls on Duncan Run online, the rumors I had heard and a quick glance at a topographic map told me that this stream was worth checking out. I frequent Kelly’s Run/Tucquan Glen and It was nice to switch it up. There is a drop of 167 feet and on a hot day at the height of summer, and the mist and spray created by the power of the water help visitors to cool down.
