Turn left here to take a 1 hr 30 min (return) detour to Pouakai Trig (1440 m). Due to a slip closing the Holly Hut Track, it’s logical to start at the lower car park, near North Egmont Visitor Centre. Follow SH3 for 13 km, then turn onto Egmont Road and follow this to the end. You’ll have excellent views of the Waiwhakaiho and Kokowai river gorges, Ahukawakawa wetland and the upper slopes of Mt Taranaki as the Holly Hut Track gradually descends to cross the unbridged Minarapa stream, and on to Holly Hut. From North Egmont Road end follow signs to Holly Hut. Once past the Kokowai Track turnoff, the track gradually descends to the Ahukawakawa Track junction.
