For me it is a no-brainer. Instead of a paper sheet with punched holes for dust collection, it is made up almost entirely of holes. I use a downdraft table on a daily basis and settled for the standard ROS. The Reviews where Festool people switched to the Ceros sounded GOOD to me… I was almost ready to submit an order for the Ceros & decided to wait until my Credit Card billing just ended, so I would have about 60 days to pay for it than 30… During that waiting time, the car needed a new clutch which delayed getting the Ceros! I put the hook and loop pad saver on as well as a 120 grit disc , pushed the power button and played with the variable speed buttons and the variable paddle switch. I have used my Mirka Deros for less than 20 hours altogether for different minor projects along with the older sanders from my shop as the Festool Rotex RO 150 FEQplus, the Makita 9046 and Hilti WFE 450, etc. I had decided I had to get a good sander with EXCELLENT DUST COLLECTION CONTROL because I had a bad experience with sanding Walnut without the good dust control… it really messed me up… eyes & lungs… I could NOT go through that again! That same vibration from orbital and random orbit sanders that makes your hands numb also causes all sorts of noise. Mirka’s decade of tooling evolution. This and your insta posts about it sold me on this. I thought there would be just a ‘little bit’ of dust left over… NONE 100% NO DUST! I wish I had not been mesmerised by the beauty of this little thing and had the money for a real sander… So, now I’ll have to check your choice out. The dust port on The sander has a nice swivel future to help avoid hose tangling. While these are very powerful they cost a lot to operate. The dust was collected by a Hitachi RP35YE providing substantial cooling to the body of the Mirka, I presumed. When you turn it down, it can become just a whisper. Too much of everything. Maybe I am naive, but it’s almost impossible to imagine it being worth that. So, if you have a supply of old 5 hole paper disks THEY ARE STILL GOOD!I went through the grits… 60, 80 with older paper disks…. kocgolf- Amazon is financing them :)-- Desert_Woodworker It makes sanding fun. Fetool ROTEX is heavier, less sensitive to overheating due to larger body but more tiring for the user. Thats right, it has + and – buttons rather than a dial to adjust the maximum speed between 4000 RPM and 10,000 RPM. |
Unless you are a master of finely tuned hand planes and cabinet scrapers, chances are you have no choice but to sand. The power and speed was unreal! This is an informative read, I appreciate reading this since it’s hard to know if these tools are worth it. The vac. The Mirka Op Man says that the thermal switch slowes and stops the sander in order to prevent the overheating. Difficult to breathe… I was wheezing for a long time (NOT DOING ANY Woodworking) until I finally felt better! Low profile nature and even less vibration are the two things I like most. I really should add a paragraph to my review about the new pad. I’ll likely keep the RO150 in case I do any heavy duty sanding and don’t want to abuse my nice Ceros. -- Have Fun! Even though it is the least expensive sander from Festool, it turned out to be quite a step up. Ceros requires a separate Power Supply that plugs into the wall & the Ceros is plugged into it; just more stuff to get in the way & store somewhere. I commented on Mirka DEROS vulnerability when used in heavy duty environment (sanding rough oak hot summer , unshaded place) . I unrolled the extra long removeable and interchangeable 4m cord and plugged it in to my Festool CT36. There is no universal , simple advise on whether Mirka or Festool Rotex to buy. Is their anything close to comparable in the festool lineup? It also allows it to run cooler when sanding paint to reduce melting of the paint and clogging. got ALL of the dust… NOT a speck! A few days ago I was sanding an oak table outside in the yard in the shade where the temperature measured some 27-28 deg C (ca 82 deg F). I did NOT notice ONE SPECK of uncollected dust! I agree the price tag is a bit steep, but We have both the Deros and the Ceros… Since we do it professionally, the price pill is a bit easier to swallow, however I think they are one of the best sanders out there and I agree dust collection is excellent. Sometimes it’s loud enough to cause hearing damage. This is somewhat of a disadvantage but it’s also an advantage. I hope and I know that you will enjoy yours.kocgolf- Amazon is financing them :). This tiny thing has got to have the highest power to weight ratio of any sander on the market. When I pushed the paddle and started sanding, my jaw dropped and my head bobbed forward. In cabinet shops you often see pneumatic sanders. They have all done the job more or less but I can’t say I ever really enjoyed using them. This is hard to choose with is a better sander …Frestool Rotex 150 vs Mirka Deros 5650 …sounds like the Mirka may over heat but sands or has a better feel plus you get a 5 and a 6 inch head. That must have been an issue with the Ceros. Yes I do. (: I am a big Festool guy and have several Festool sanders, RO150 and ETS150/3 pertinent to this discussion. Although…not one speck of dust, huh?....food for thought. Whether or not this award winning sander makes sense for you can only be determined by you personally. The benefits that I see every time I use it for outweigh the cost. Can you beleive that? While we love the ceros, the Deros, seems to be the chosen child.. It all depends on many factors like how intense , frequent and demanding the use of the sander is, the size and roughness of the wood surfaces you work on, the environment ( ambient temperature and the dust extraction air flow ), the type of wood, etc. Up until a few months ago I thought festool was the only way to go, but after researching I have read similar accounts of people with both who prefer the mirka. I had some very ROUGH slabs of Black Walnut to use as a Test piece. In the last decade, this team has been at the cutting-edge of technology advancement and has created the DEROS and LEROS sanders, which are two of the most ergonomic and easy to use sanders on the market and are amongst Mirka’s best selling products. This means that it comes with a large transformer. My god, 600 bucks for a ROS?! In addition to high volume cabinet shops, who else is buying the Mirka Deros? I also got some Abranet sanding disks and the Pad Savers. As a fire , water and mold damage restoration and remodeling contractor, I have used the Deros on many types of sanding tasks. There are also 2.5mm and 8mm versions for finer or more aggressive sanding. It was the most compact sander I had ever seen.
